The story
Eight months pregnant, Lydia loses her baby in a car accident, and her once-gentle husband turns cruel, blaming her and forcing a divorce so he can marry his long-lost first love. When Grayson Brooke, her childhood friend, returns from overseas, he confesses his love and promises to cherish her forever. They marry the day she leaves the hospital.
Three years later, Lydia overhears Grayson and his friend Shawn Carson: the accident was staged to harvest her baby's cord blood for Kayla, the woman he truly loves. Every tender word was a performance; she and her child were only medical assets.
Clutching a pregnancy test, Lydia hides her knowledge, records what she can, and quietly asks a lawyer for a divorce, even as Grayson arranges a citywide fireworks display in her name.
Opening
At eight months pregnant, I was in a car accident and delivered a stillborn child.
My husband, who had always been so gentle, turned on me. He called me useless. He said I couldn't even protect our baby.
