The story
On New Year's Eve, Grace Atkinson prepares a feast, but her husband Vincent Porter never comes home. Their daughter Lorelei shows her a post: Vincent is with Christine Snow, his childhood sweetheart, and a boy named Charlie, sharing a swan-shaped cake. Vincent has long kept his marriage hidden and treats Grace as a burden.
When Vincent orders Grace to prepare for a visit to the Porter residence, she takes Lorelei to buy a gift for his parents, Victor Porter and Daisy Chambers. At the mall they run into Vincent and Christine, and an awkward meal follows. Charlie throws a tantrum, scalding Lorelei with soup, yet Vincent blames Grace and leaves with Christine.
Grace finally stops explaining herself and takes Lorelei to see a doctor, her patience worn thin.
Opening
On New Year's Eve, I prepare a feast. The clock strikes twelve, but my husband, Vincent Porter, still isn't home.
My daughter, Lorelei Porter, tugs at my sleeve and holds up my phone.
"Look Mommy, Daddy is at this lady's house!"
Vincent has posted an update on Twitter. He is with Christine Snow, his childhood sweetheart. They are smiling at the camera, with a boy who looks about ten standing between them. In front of them sits a swan-shaped cake.
