The story
Amelia's husband, Ethan, has a "girl best friend" named Hailey. They grew up together, share beds and ice cream, and Ethan insists Amelia should simply trust him. When Amelia asks for boundaries, Ethan grows annoyed and his friends call Hailey a little sister. Hailey answers with passive-aggressive remarks in public, and Amelia gains a reputation for being jealous and unreasonable.
After Ethan misses their movie and Hailey posts tickets bearing his wedding ring, Amelia stops caring. She packs for a business trip, and when Ethan meets her at the airport, Hailey is already in the front seat. Amelia simply opens the back door for her own companion, a flamboyant young man named Leo, who calls himself her bestie.
Ethan is stunned and displeased, but Amelia's calm leaves him speechless. The drive home is quiet up front, while Amelia and Leo chat the whole way.
Opening
They were so close they slept in the same bed, shared ice cream cones, the whole nine yards.
I asked them to keep some distance.
He just got annoyed. "If something was going to happen between us, it would have happened a long time ago. Can't you just trust me?"
Fine.
So I went and got myself a "guy best friend."
The night Ethan, once again, didn't come home and stayed out with Hailey, I was surprisingly calm.
He showed up around noon the next day, carrying takeout from my favorite brunch spot.
