The story
Jasper Lawrence and Simone have turned their marriage into a war zone, trading spectacular acts of mutual destruction for two years. When Jasper is photographed escorting an anonymous college girl into the city's premier maternity ward, high society waits for Simone's retaliation. Instead, she stays still for three days, then tells him she has decided to kidnap the songbird he has been hiding. For the first time, Jasper looks terrified and races across town.
Simone follows him to the suburban house where she grew up. There, her sister Lacey opens the door, and Jasper pulls her into his arms, confessing that he and Lacey are together. Simone's parents watch without surprise, and her mother calls her a selfish leech, blaming her for a twin brother who died before birth. Lacey says only that she is sorry.
Then Lacey doubles over, and Jasper asks if the baby is making her sick again. Simone sees the curve of her sister's belly, and remembers her own pregnancy a year ago, when she believed a child might bridge the distance between her and Jasper.
