The story
Chloe and her best friend Vivian are transported to a post-apocalyptic world where women are a vanishing species. In the Citadel, men feed and guard them, and Vivian calls it paradise. Chloe sees the price: the doctors have judged them extraordinarily healthy specimens, and eight genetically compatible Enforcers have been chosen to make them conceive. When the Enforcers enter their apartment at night, Chloe learns the milk was drugged and Vivian is already asleep.
Jax, the Citadel's coldest Enforcer and the son of its former Commander, comes for Chloe. She hides a knife and threatens to kill herself rather than be forcibly bred; he disarms her, ties her to the bed and stays, while Vivian's cries sound through the wall. Vivian is taken away, and Chloe is locked alone in the Spire, refusing to eat. An old, white-haired man who outranks Jax visits her and tells her plainly that her work is to bear children.
Chloe wants only to return home, but the Citadel's kindness has a cost, and the man assigned to guard her is the one she hates most.
Opening
Here, the men gave us the best food and protected us with their lives. After a while, my friend didn't want to go back.
"This is paradise," she said.
But as I watched the men who guarded us day and night, a chill crept down my spine.
I knew that no kindness in this world comes without a price. And I knew that no matter the era, the male's primary instinct is to reproduce.
By the time I fully grasped our situation, the Enforcers had already slipped inside the apartment Vivian and I shared.
There were eight of them. Clad in black uniforms, they stood like shadows in the dim light—young…
