The story
Willow has a fever of 104 degrees, but her mother, Lydia, refuses to believe she is truly ill. Convinced her daughter is faking to skip school, Lydia locks her outside in the freezing December wind, ignoring her pleas and her purple-tipped fingers. When Dad, Grant, comes home, he hesitates, but Lydia's insistence that Willow is an actress who must learn a lesson convinces him to leave her out in the cold.
As the hours pass, Willow's body temperature drops and her consciousness fades. Inside, her parents' argument continues, dredging up old accusations about missed periods and hidden pills. Willow can only cling to the door and wonder whether her parents will ever believe her—or whether she even has a future left to worry about.
Opening
When my temperature spiked again at school, the principal’s office called my mom. But all I heard was a cold snort from the receiver.
“Ms. Harrison, please don’t let her fool you. Willow is capable of anything to get out of class.”
Ms. Harrison’s voice was firm. “Lydia, Willow has a fever of 104 degrees. If it goes any higher, it could be life-threatening.”
Only then did my mother agree to come.
