The story
When her follow-up scan comes back, a mother waits three hours in the lobby of Mercy Oncology Center, clutching her X-rays. She is the mother-in-law of Dr. Regina Ward, the youngest associate chief of oncology, but Regina's answer through the internal line is that she should take a general admission ticket rather than use the VIP express lane. The report circles a hilar shadow and recommends immediate screening for malignancy, yet the earliest opening for a contrast CT is next Wednesday.
Regina personally escorts another patient out of the VIP elevator, with Wayne, her first love, at her side; his mother's benign thyroid nodule earns a private suite, the chief's consultation and a biopsy the next morning. At home, Wayne sits in Dan's chair wearing Dan's zip-up, and Regina tells Dan simply to wait. Dan begins searching for family law firms.
The next day he drives his mother to another teaching hospital across town, where a senior pulmonologist studies the scans and asks why they waited so long to bring her in.
