The story
On Vermeil Island, beneath the full moon, the forbidden creatures take lives, and a man fleeing through the elm and hickory trees is caught and killed for knowing their existence. Alaina, an introverted student, travels there with her friend Lidia and their class for three weeks. Their guide Caleb tells them the island's myth: a queen loved a commoner named Ian, who betrayed her because he was a vampire seeking a broken heart to free himself from a curse.
Alaina feels an eerie silence beneath the island's divine beauty. The section head Aaron Miller, a cold-eyed, handsome man, warns the students to stay away from the southern region or be fined and thrown out. Yet Alaina cannot stop wondering whether vampires are real, and one of them is searching for pure blood, drawn to a scent that ignites his desires.
She never meant to fall in love, least of all with a forbidden being, but the pull between them may prove as dangerous as the island itself.
