The story
While visiting his hometown to help his parents harvest pears, a father is contacted by his son Stanley's kindergarten teacher, Ernest Dugan. Dugan offers five dollars a pound for the family's Green Jewel pears, a variety worth far more, and when the father politely declines, Dugan posts the offer in the parent group chat. Soon dozens of parents are demanding the pears, led by committee head Jay Bradshaw, mocking him when he explains the crop is already reserved.
Dugan then threatens Stanley's place as lead dancer in the school showcase, and the boy is moved to the back corner of the classroom, isolated from his classmates. When the father confronts Dugan, the teacher only hints that Stanley has more than a year left at the kindergarten and suggests he reconsider the pear deal.
As a blocked shipment bound for Windford is surrounded by determined buyers, military vehicles seal off the road, and officials reveal the pears were ordered for a state banquet.
Opening
While on vacation, I return to my hometown to help my parents harvest pears. After seeing my Instagram post, my son's homeroom teacher, Ernest Dugan, sends me a private message.
"So you sell pears, Mr. Miller? The kindergarten hasn't finalized next month's fruit supplier yet, so we'll order from you. You won't suffer any loss from this deal.
