The story
On Devil's Night, a college student named Jason joins his roommate Tyler for a private overnight "immersion experience" in a viral haunted house. Tyler has paid a fortune to rent the whole building, hoping to impress Sienna from their Psych 101 class. But after two hours descending the service stairs, the guide admits he has never seen this many floors, and the basement never comes.
When the guide calls his manager, the line erupts with inhuman screaming. Tyler's own call brings the same horror, and his phone dies on the concrete. Trapped in a windowless stairwell with panicked freshmen like Kevin and Lily, the group learns the building's history: a low-income housing project where a family was slaughtered for their gold, and two siblings were hunted down these very stairs by every tenant in the building.
Now the stairs refuse to end, and something below is waiting.
Opening
It was October 30th—Devil’s Night. He’d dropped a staggering amount of money to rent the entire place out for a private, overnight "immersion experience." We were supposed to be there until dawn.
We hadn’t been on the service stairs for more than twenty minutes when the guide suddenly stopped. He wiped a bead of sweat from his forehead, his flashlight beam trembling against the gray concrete.
"We’ve been going down for dozens of flights now," he muttered, his voice sounding thin in the narrow stairwell. "Why haven't we hit the basement yet?"
