The story
Queenie's husband Richard Peterson, a doctor, secretly gives the kidney meant for their daughter Cammy to Lacy, the daughter of the woman he has always loved. Cammy's condition worsens and she dies, while Lacy's surgery succeeds and Richard celebrates throughout the hospital. Told she has late-stage cancer, Queenie leaves the hospital with Cammy's ashes and drafts divorce papers.
When Richard comes home, he scolds her for being unreasonable and tosses her his jacket to wash. She asks for a divorce and refuses his money, but he threatens to take Cammy's custody and storms out. He signs the papers the next day, still demanding Cammy be brought to him.
Queenie returns to her parents, who care for her without asking questions. In a sunlit afternoon she is reunited with Cammy, and together they set out to see Richard.
Opening
My husband secretly swapped the transplant recipient, giving the kidney that was meant for our daughter to the daughter of the woman he had always loved.
Not long after, our daughter's condition worsened. The doctors tried to save her, but it was no use. She didn't make it.
At the same time, the other girl's surgery was a success. My husband was so overjoyed that he handed out little gifts to the entire hospital in celebration.
Rage and grief overwhelmed me, and I collapsed. When I came to, the doctors told me I had cancer. Late-stage. My time was running out.
