The story
June has spent five years believing her long-distance boyfriend Virgil is a poor night watchman, just as she believes they are both barely surviving. On Thanksgiving, a photo he sends from his shift reveals a pork sausage roll on his desk — impossible, since Virgil is a devout Muslim. She spends her last savings on an eleven-hour bus ride to Boston to surprise him.
At the high-rise where he claims to work, a security guard calls him Mr. Holloway, the CEO, and points her toward the lobby, where Virgil is celebrating his secretary Lydia's birthday. When June calls her best friend Bella, Bella admits she already knew: it was all a loyalty test to see whether June only wanted his money. Then June phones her oncologist and learns she has roughly three months left.
Outside the glass, June watches Virgil lie to her by text, and she tells him it is over. The man in the bespoke suit is a stranger to the boy who once gave her a cheap silver necklace.
Opening
On Thanksgiving, my long-distance boyfriend sent me his usual check-in photo. He said he was stuck working the holiday shift, eating instant ramen in the security guard booth.
I pinched my fingers on the screen, zooming in.
Right at the edge of his desk, partially cut off by the frame, sat a half-eaten pork sausage roll.
Virgil is a devout Muslim. We had been together for five years. He was the kind of man who would grimace if my fork so much as brushed a plate that had touched lard. There was absolutely no way he would eat pork.
