The story
In a family bound by an old mountain tradition, a daughter's engagement night calls for the heirloom brass lantern to be lit and carried to the ridge's edge, guiding the prospective groom home. When two sisters are engaged on the same night, only one lantern exists, and it is carried down the eastern trail for Josie's fiancé, Logan Caldwell. Lydia's fiancé, Jonah, waits alone at the unlit West Fork, a narrow gravel track beside a sixty-foot drop.
Her father and brother refuse to walk the western trail, invoking a tradition that the welcome lamp cannot guide two sons-in-law in one night. While relatives celebrate Josie's tea service, Lydia is told to hold the tray and smile. Jonah finally arrives on foot, his suit torn and his hand bleeding, yet the six engagement boxes are unharmed.
As the red lantern glows over Josie's celebration, Lydia tends Jonah's wounds and asks whether his overseas company transfer is still open. She wants to leave with him.
