The story
Fire Chief Ethan Caldwell deliberately set fire to his own home to help intern Claire Bennet pass her probation, while his wife Rachel Monroe was out. Their three-year-old daughter was trapped inside. When Rachel rushed back, she found Claire posing as a hero for cameras, cradling the burned child, while Ethan praised Claire and publicly blamed Rachel for leaving the girl alone.
Rachel, a decorated firefighter herself, recognized the arson from the potassium permanganate and glycerin stains on Ethan's cuffs. She also carried photos Claire had sent her that morning, showing Claire and Ethan together in a hotel. As the crowd turned on Rachel and demanded she thank Claire, her daughter's condition worsened.
Claire dropped the child and accused Rachel of trying to kill her, while Ethan held Rachel down. Gripping her phone, Rachel faced them coldly, telling Claire that she knew where Rachel had gone before the fire.
Opening
My firefighter husband, Ethan Caldwell, deliberately set a fire at home while I was out, to help Claire Bennet pass her probation as soon as possible
Instantly, flames shot up into the sky, swallowing our three-year-old daughter who was fast asleep inside.
When I got a notification from the home surveillance system, I rushed back in a panic.
What greeted me was a scene straight out of a nightmare.
Claire cradling her unconscious, badly burned daughter in her arms like some goddess of salvation, surrounded by flashing cameras and reporters.
