The story
For two years, Eliza has run Verdant Market while her husband Brett sat behind the register, quietly routing the store's card deposits into his ex-wife Melanie's account. Wholesale invoices bounced, birthday money vanished, and each time Brett shrugged it off as goodwill for a struggling single mother. Now the seven-thousand-dollar commercial rent is due, and the payment terminal Eliza reprogrammed herself has been switched back to Melanie's routing number.
When Eliza demands the money be returned, Brett refuses, shoves her into a display rack, and insists they borrow the rent instead. He is furious that she returned two cases of vintage bourbon meant for Melanie's father's birthday. He mocks her failing health and the kidney tumor that requires surgery she has been saving for, telling her no one else would want her.
Eliza offers him a choice: bring back the money and sign the dissolution papers. Then she calls a liquidation broker to clear the store.
Opening
We had agreed that this morning’s revenue from the market would go directly toward the commercial lease.
I was standing behind the counter, cross-referencing the morning register tapes with the digital merchant portal, when Brett casually glanced at his phone and grimaced.
