The story
Three days after donating a kidney to his wife, Evan Whitmore kisses a nurse in front of her hospital bed. Lying there, she learns the truth: the album on his phone, titled "Caregiving Journal", holds more than nine hundred photos of him and the young nurse, Lily Parker, taken from the day she was admitted. He does not deny it. After ten years of marriage, he says, love has nothing to do with it; he has simply been waiting for her to recover so he can keep Lily openly.
She remembers what he once was: the man who carried her out of an underground auction, whose family paid thirty million dollars to settle her father's debts, who swore he would never betray her. Now he shields Lily from every accusation, blames his wife for humiliating her, and threatens divorce. When a wrong medication leaves her struggling to breathe, he asks her to let it go.
Fired and cast out of her own hospital room, she is left to decide what remains of fifteen years of love.
Opening
I lay frozen in my hospital bed, tears spilling down my face.
“Crying already?”
After the nurse left, he sighed helplessly.
“I wasn’t planning to hide it from you.”
“You just never noticed.”
He opened the photo album on his phone and handed it to me.
The latest picture had been taken ten minutes earlier, while I was in the bathroom vomiting until I could barely stand.
