The story
Nina is a young woman worn thin by ten straight nights of overtime, invisible to her own family. Her mother posts a mocking video of her childhood tears online, while her sister Phoebe's polished selfies draw praise and money. When Nina fails to answer Phoebe's messages fast enough, her mother calls to berate her, then announces a date has been arranged with a divorced man named Trent, whose family sold land to commercial developers and who is willing to pay fifty thousand dollars to the family as a gift if Nina marries him.
At the diner, Trent inspects Nina like livestock, sneers at her salary and her age, and declares she must give him a son. Nina's mother pins her wrist and warns that walking out means being dead to her. Nina sinks back into the booth as Trent takes her plate, leaving her a salad and soup, and her mother keeps pitching the match.
Nina earns four thousand a month, sends money to Phoebe, and cannot remember the last time anyone told her they loved her.
Opening
I was running on ten consecutive nights of overtime. I swiped the screen, hoping for some mindless scrolling to take the edge off, but instead, I was ambushed by my mother’s latest TikTok update.
Two videos, posted side-by-side. They hit me like twin slaps to the face.
My older sister’s video featured her latest heavily-filtered selfie. The caption read: Whoever gets my gorgeous girl is blessed!
