The story
Jennifer Lockwood has spent eighteen years as a stand-in for her dead sister, Jenna. Her mother, Christine Hudson, and father, Jacob Lockwood, punish her whenever she chooses anything Jenna would not have chosen, and she is beaten for ranking first in her school because Jenna was only an average student. She learns to imitate Jenna in every way, from her hair to her birthday cake, even though she is allergic to mangoes.
After Jennifer becomes top scorer on the SATs, her parents secretly change her college applications and accuse her of cheating. Her mother locks her in Jenna's room and vows to report her, while her father tells her to apologize for upsetting her mother. Numb, Jennifer wonders whether dying like Jenna, who drowned at eighteen, is the only way to be loved.
When her mother mistakes her for Jenna and offers a rare moment of tenderness, Jennifer counts down the seconds until the delusion ends.
Opening
The day before starting elementary school, Mom and Dad take me to buy a backpack.
With a wide smile, Mom asks me, "Blue or red—which one do you want?"
When I choose blue, Mom's expression changes instantly.
She clamps her hands onto my shoulders and screams hysterically at me, "Why didn't you choose red? Jenna would only ever choose red!"
Dad slaps me right across the face when he sees that Mom is having another episode.
