The story
For ten years, Monica has built her life around Galen, a man who has missed nine family dinners and always puts Helena's crises first. When her mother is diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer and asks to meet the man who will care for Monica after she is gone, Galen dismisses the wish as emotional blackmail and rushes off to comfort Helena instead.
Monica ends the relationship and turns to Simon Ward, her mother's oncologist, a man who has quietly waited in the margins of her life. She asks him to marry her, and he agrees. At her mother's bedside she tells the truth about Galen and introduces Simon as her new partner.
As the door of the hospital room opens, Monica stands free of a decade of devotion to a man who never chose her.
Opening
But Galen always had an excuse. A high-profile case, a critical deposition, a late-night strategy meeting. Nine family dinners. Nine times he had promised to show, and nine times his chair had remained empty.
The tenth time was different. My mother was diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer. Her doctor told us we were looking at weeks, maybe days. All she wanted—her final, desperate wish—was to look into the eyes of the man who would take care of me when she was gone.
