The story
When her husband Mark is diagnosed with end-stage renal failure, Anna abandons her career to live in the halls of Saint Jude's Hospital, selling their condo and borrowing from relatives to fund his surgery. Then, hidden in a stairwell, she overhears him laughing with another woman about the illness being an act and the money meant for a baby and a new life together.
Anna returns to the room wearing a mask of devotion, letting Mark and Jess—her best friend, maid of honor, and his attending physician—believe she suspects nothing. She quietly enlists a nurse named Brenda and takes Mark's medical file, while the surgery draws closer.
What neither of them knows is that Mark is truly ill, though not with kidney failure. Anna has been hiding his real diagnosis, and she alone decides when to reveal it.
Opening
My world had shrunk to the size of his hospital bed. Until one afternoon, when the weight of it all finally crushed me. I ducked into a concrete stairwell, the heavy fire door sighing shut behind me, and let the sobs I’d been swallowing for weeks rack my body.
That’s when I heard their voices from the landing below. His voice, and the voice of another woman.
“Are you sure that bitch has no idea you’re faking it?”
