The story
Bella Shaw has spent six months building the riverfront condo she paid for herself, from the down payment to the trim. When her fiancé Devon West bars her from the master bedroom so that Mallory, freshly discharged from a psychiatric ward, can rest, Bella says nothing and sleeps on the sofa instead.
Soon Mallory's silk sheets, sleep aids and beige trench coats fill the home, while Bella's expired medicine and soot-dusted wedding dress are pushed aside. Devon and his mother ask only after Mallory's rest, never Bella's health.
Quietly, Bella gathers her down payment records, mortgage payments and renovation invoices, and asks her friend Sam to draft a pre-marital asset liquidation. If the master bedroom is not hers, the house need not belong to them.
Opening
When I listed the riverfront condo—the one where I’d personally put down the three-hundred-thousand-dollar down payment—the realtor asked how I could bear to slash the price so drastically just to get rid of it.
I pulled at the corner of my mouth.
"Because of a cashmere throw."
The night before, I had worked past midnight. My stomach ulcer flared up, leaving me shivering on the living room floor in a cold sweat. All I wanted was to slide into the master bed and close my eyes.
But Devon’s hand clamped down on the doorknob, blocking me. He frowned.
