The story
On National Day, Jerome returns from work to buy the finest apartment at Serenia Residences for his parents' retirement. Before he can sign, Henry, his ex-wife's younger brother, snatches the contract and signs his own name, claiming the eleven-million-dollar apartment as a wedding gift. The sales manager, Roy, backs Henry, revealing himself as Henry's brother-in-law and the current husband of Jerome's ex-wife, Shannon, and offers to sell the property back for fourteen million dollars as an apology for the past.
When Jerome calls the police, Shannon arrives with a colder demand: seven hundred million, half his profits every month, or she will post old secrets online and destroy his company. She tears her shirt, stages an assault, and Henry films it, then her relatives surge in to beat Jerome. Cornered, Jerome fights back, blinding Henry with a mechanical key and leaving one attacker dead.
Shannon tells the police Jerome attacked her, and with no cameras and only their coordinated testimony, the evidence points to him.
Opening
I was just about to sign the contract when the door slammed open. Henry, my ex-wife’s younger brother, walked in with a smirk that froze my hand mid-signature.
“Wait.” He snatched the contract and the pen from my grasp, his voice dripping false warmth. “Let me sign the contract.”
Before I could react, he wrote his name across the page. Then, looking up, he said with a grin that made my stomach turn. “Since you’ve bought me the best apartment, I’ll tell my sister to remarry you when I get home.”
