The story
Dawn Jensen has spent years putting her family first, but her daughter Ruth keeps saying she wants a different mother. When Ruth names Vivian Green, her tutor and the woman Jordan Jensen has never forgotten, Dawn finally stops trying to win them back. She signs a confidential agreement to join a national research project, the same offer she once refused for Ruth's sake.
At home, Vivian moves through the house like its lady, and Ruth and Jordan treat Dawn as the outsider. Jordan calls her unreasonable for taking Ruth's words seriously, and Ruth complains that her mother is mean. Dawn no longer argues. She leaves for the lab and lets them have what they chose.
Her daughter was born after a dangerous pregnancy and labor she fought to survive. Now Dawn must decide what her years of sacrifice were really worth.
Opening
When my daughter, Ruth Jensen, says for the tenth time that she wants a different mother, I don't get angry. I just calmly ask her who she wants instead.
She blurts, "Vivian."
She means Vivian Green, her tutor… and also the woman my husband has never been able to forget.
At Ruth's birthday party that day, she even openly thanks Vivian, saying Vivian takes care of her like a mother.
Looking at Ruth's young, innocent face, I finally understand that she doesn't like me. So, I stop caring for her and my husband the way I used to.
