The story

After her daughter Maisie falls ill, Hannah's mother brings a muslin bag of wild Appalachian herbal she foraged in the Vermont woods. Hannah warns her husband Garrett not to touch it, but he gives the roots to his client's young secretary, Chelsea. When Hannah confronts him, he dismisses her, and Maisie's gastritis flares up again after he feeds her greasy fast food.

At the hospital, Maisie asks whether her father simply does not like being around her. Garrett never arrives. Hannah finds a pink journal in the pantry, filled in Garrett's handwriting with details about Chelsea Ward, the account coordinator at his client firm. When he finally appears with shellfish and spicy crawfish, foods that endanger both Hannah and Maisie, Hannah tells him she found the journal.

Cornered, Garrett lashes out, insisting his time with Chelsea is only to secure a contract for the family. Hannah shields her sleeping daughter's ears as he searches for a lie that will hold.

Opening

After my daughter fell ill, my mother brought over a small muslin bag filled with wild Appalachian herbal. She had foraged it herself up in the Vermont woods, nearly fracturing her ankle on a steep ridge in the process.

I felt incredibly guilty and deeply touched. I carefully tucked the bag away in the pantry and repeatedly warned Garrett not to touch it.

But when I came home from work, the pantry shelf was bare. Garrett had given the precious roots to his client's young secretary.
