The story
On the night of their seventh wedding anniversary, a rooftop lounge becomes a furnace. Vivian Drake pulls Tristan Burke from the smoke and leaves her husband Ian Mercer behind, promising to come straight back for him. A collapsing crossbeam pins him to the floor, and he wakes three days later in the Intensive Care Unit with irreversible heart damage. Vivian swears she turned back, but her unanswered question and her silenced phone say more than her words.
Her father Richard Drake arrives to press her toward Tristan, and Vivian leaves Ian's bedside to sit with him instead. Once, she had paid his dying father's hospital bill and told Ian the sky would not fall. Now he reaches for the faded ledger of that debt and calls his lawyer, Jonathan, to put a price on everything she gave him.
A debt has been open too long, and the books are about to close.

The doctor stood at the foot of my bed, speaking in the hushed, measured cadence reserved for bad news, while Vivian Drake remained motionless beside the window.
Her evening gown still carried the sharp, acrid stench of scorched silk and soot. A clean strip of surgical gauze was taped across the back of her right hand—the same hand that had shielded Tristan Burke as the beams buckled and came down.
