The story
After the divorce, Alex's mother insists her daughter is a boy. She raises Alex as a son, takes her to the men's restroom, and sends her to live in the boys' dorms. Alex learns young that only by pretending to be a boy can she earn her mother's love.
At fifteen, her body begins to change, and her classmates' whispers turn cruel. When she cries to her mother, hoping to finally be seen as a girl, her mother calmly announces she has booked a mastectomy. Alex begs to skip the surgery; her mother instead offers hormone treatments and a cup of warm milk. She wakes strapped to an operating table.
Afterward, Alex's chest is flat and bandaged, and her mother calls her a proper boy. Then a familiar pain returns, and the proof of her girlhood reappears. At school, the truth bleeds through her clothes, and the boys' restroom stall door is kicked open.
Opening
After Mom and Dad divorced, Mom developed a gender identity disorder.
She raised me, her daughter, as a boy.
She took me to the men’s restroom, where I had to use the urinals.
She made me live in the boys’ dorms, exposed to my male classmates.
I was young then, and no one really noticed anything unusual.
Until I turned fifteen, and my body started to change.
My classmates’ gazes grew strange.
“Is that a freak? So disgusting!”
“Neither male nor female, always flaunting herself around men!”
Feeling wronged, I went home and cried to Mom.
