The story
For a year, a seventh-grade girl has endured relentless bullying from Lucas Rothwell, the school's feared alpha. She never understood why he singled her out, until the day he holds her head underwater in a filthy restroom sink and, in her struggle, she tears the chain of his cherished pocket watch. The photo inside shows her mother and a small boy—and the truth begins to surface.
At home, her mother, Eleanor Hayes, confirms it: Lucas Rothwell is her first child, the son she gave up after a failed marriage. He bullies the girl because he hates her, and he threatens her into silence to keep their mother from learning the truth.
Now the girl knows why he torments her, but she is caught between a brother who wants to destroy her and a mother who believes she has no son.
Opening
When my head was viciously held underwater in the grimy sink, his face would twist into a mask of savage satisfaction. I never understood why he targeted me.
Until that day, when in my struggle, I tore the chain of his cherished pocket watch. The photo inside—a picture of my mother and him—revealed the truth. He was my older half-brother. The son my mother had, in her deepest disappointment, given up. He bullied me because he hated me.
That night, returning home, I no longer hid my bruises.
