The story

When a girl wins a place at a prestigious high school, the fish-stall owner next to her mother's stall, Tyler Graham, has their stall wrecked. His people ambush her mother, crushing her hands, feet and sternum with a hammer; she survives only in the ICU. The police refuse a case, the courts turn her away, and Tyler's son Kingston offers money and a pre-signed apology instead of justice. Her school admission is cancelled as a warning.

With her mother barely alive and her savings gone, she takes her late father's Meritorious Service Medal and kneels all night outside the gate of the Central Military Region, begging for help. When every door closes, she posts the security footage online under her own name, naming Tyler and Kingston Graham of Javelin, and the city begins to talk.

Opening

The day I got accepted into that prestigious high school, the guy who owned the fish stall next to ours brought a group of people to wreck our stall.

My mom rushed out to confront them, but as soon as she left the house, they ambushed her. They slammed a hammer into her hands and feet and didn’t stop until her sternum was crushed, blood everywhere.

I grabbed the high-definition security footage and took it to the police, but they wouldn’t even open a case—said there wasn’t enough evidence.
