The story
On the night before the college application deadline, Callie Danforth stands outside a restaurant where her parents have planned a celebration dinner. Floating lines of text warn her that her parents and her guidance counselor, Mr. Ormsby, intend to extract her account verification code and swap her application to a local teachers' college, locking her into teaching in her hometown. She turns away, claiming a stomachache, and takes a taxi to an urgent care clinic.
In the taxi she changes her password, reconfirms her applications, records the screen, and alerts the state admissions office and her friend Wendy Morales. But that night a login alert appears, and by 12:41 am her application has been rewritten: Calvert University and every out-of-state school are gone, replaced by the local teachers' college and a community college.
At dawn her parents arrive at the clinic, and Mr. Ormsby calls to deny any wrongdoing. When her father snatches her phone, Callie grabs it back, refusing to let them decide her future.
Opening
The night before the college application deadline, my parents said they wanted to throw me a celebration dinner.
I had a pretty good score on my SAT.
However, the moment I reached the restaurant entrance, a few lines of text suddenly floated in front of my eyes.
[Don't go in.]
