The story
Lydia Flint has grown up in the shadow of her cousin Janet Gabriel, the pampered only daughter of the family, while her own mother Patricia Flint endures the disapproval of her grandmother Georgina Flint. When Janet asks Lydia to meet a young man, Cecil Bainbridge, Lydia agrees, expecting another disappointing blind date.
At dinner Janet presents Cecil as her own good friend, then quietly pushes him toward Lydia. Yet as the evening goes on, Cecil's gentle attention settles on Lydia, and Janet's careful plan begins to slip away from her. She cannot bear to lose the spotlight she has always claimed.
When Janet realises the man she meant to test now favours her cousin, she spreads rumours among the relatives that Lydia stole her boyfriend and calls a family meeting to condemn her. Lydia decides she will no longer step aside.
