The story
In a household of highly educated professionals, a daughter who cannot speak is treated as a genetic failure, while her adopted sister Jacey Lee is cherished as a genius. The parents' contempt follows the girl everywhere, and her small offerings of love are swept away as garbage.
When she is eight, she falls into the canal at Willow Creek while visiting the family graves with Grandma. Grandma's frantic calls reach the girl's father, Simson, but he dismisses them as attention-seeking and refuses to come, certain the child will crawl home when hungry. A neighbour, Frank Lowe, later reports a pink shoe by the water, and is waved off just as coldly.
Meanwhile Jacey sits safe in a convenience store, and the parents lavish her with an expensive meal. A silent girl's last wish is only to be hugged once, and to give her father the candy she saved for her birthday.
Opening
They considered me a genetic failure and devoted all their love and effort to their adopted genius daughter, Jacey Lee.
In this family, Jacey was treated like a ray of sunshine, while I was seen as a filthy rat in the gutter.
Their eyes were always filled with contempt whenever they looked at me.
“Just seeing your vacant, idiotic face makes me sick. Stay away from us. Don’t infect your sister with your low intelligence.”
When I was eight, Grandma took me to Willow Creek to visit our family graves.
