The story
At a holiday dinner, Harper's stepdaughter Setlla drops the gift card she was given into the trash, mocking it as a pauper's handout and boasting that her mother Victoria sends far more. When Liam, her father, offers to send her to live with Victoria, a single phone call reveals that Victoria has cut her daughter loose and will not take her back.
Setlla's denial turns to fury aimed at Harper. She hurls Harper's cashmere coat from a window, wrecks her art space, and smashes a framed charcoal portrait of Liam and Harper, smearing lipstick across Harper's face. Liam tells her that Victoria is pregnant with a son and no longer needs her, then packs Setlla's suitcase and puts her out of the house.
Left with the wreckage and a mocking post from Setlla, Harper and Liam face the aftermath of a family torn apart.

The climax of the holiday dinner arrived not with the dessert, but with a piece of plastic.
My stepdaughter, Setlla Maxwell, took the gift card I’d handed her—a discreetly wrapped fifty-dollar bill I’d included with a sincere card—and dropped it with an audible clatter into the trash can beside the dining table.
