The story
On the fifth anniversary of his relationship with Andrea Hill, Vincent Shafer prepares a proposal with flowers, candles and everyone they know waiting downstairs. Andrea arrives late in a taxi, and Spencer Metcalf, her first love, steps out after her. She brushes the proposal aside, says it should wait for another day, and leaves with Spencer on a photography business trip.
Vincent has just been diagnosed with Alzheimer's, and the money in his bank card is meant for the medication that could slow it. Andrea knows the PIN; by the time he gets home, the account has been emptied. With his memory already slipping and his grandmother in the countryside depending on him, he is left broke and with nowhere to turn.
He had only wanted to propose before he forgot everything. Now he must face what is being taken from him, and what he may no longer be able to remember.
Opening
On our fifth anniversary, my girlfriend, Andrea Hill, turns down my proposal. She then takes the money I've saved up for my medical treatment and runs off to Ivalor to catch the aurora borealis with her first love, Spencer Metcalf.
The moment the lights dance across the sky, they make a heartfelt wish together.
"Let's be together for the rest of our lives."
But when my late-stage Alzheimer's wipes out my memories and I forget who she even is…
