The story
Ava Thorne's cancer diagnosis arrives on the same day her husband Ethan Cole empties her bank account to fund a lavish gift for Maya Vance's wedding. When Ava goes to the reception to reclaim the money for her surgery deposit, Maya mocks her paleness before a laughing crowd, and Ethan drags her out, accusing her of causing a scene and taking the last of her cash.
Back home, Ava calls a real estate agent to sell the house quickly. Days later, after a car startles her at a crosswalk and she badly gashes her arm, the hospital phones Ethan, listed in her contacts as My Love. He refuses to come, and Maya's voice sounds in the background. Returning home, Ava finds Ethan comforting Maya, whose wedding was called off, and he blames Ava for it.
When Maya is found unconscious with Ava's own sleeping pills, Ethan accuses Ava of attempted murder and forces her to drive them to the hospital, ignoring her bleeding arm. At the hospital, Ava meets the kind young nurse once more.
Opening
He took all that money to Maya Vance’s wedding as a gift.
I went to the reception hall, desperate to get that money back for my surgery deposit.
Maya, tipsy and bold, pointed at me and slurred, "Ava, you look so pale… anyone who didn't know better would think you were dying!"
Laughter erupted around us; they all thought it was just a drunken joke.
I lowered my voice, telling her I was dying and needed the gift money back.
