The story
At her university's blood donation drive, Briana Hayes is forced to take part despite her severe anemia, because her mother, Mrs. Cole, is the department director and refuses to be accused of favoritism. When Briana weakens after only a hundred milliliters, the nurse, Sharon Jones, pins her wrist down and accuses her of pretending to be sick to escape donating.
Mrs. Cole watches coldly, ordering her daughter to finish the full donation even if it kills her. As Sharon jabs her again and again and classmates whisper with contempt, Briana collapses. Her soul drifts upward, watching her own bruised body on the floor while her mother, believing she is faking, kicks and stomps her, saying she regrets giving birth to her.
Sharon then stages a fall and blames the dead girl for pushing her, and Mrs. Cole comforts the nurse and orders the needle reinserted. Only when the dean arrives and sees the blood does the truth begin to surface.
Opening
After only 100 milliliters, my vision started going dark.
I reached for the needle, trying to stop the procedure, but the young nurse immediately grabbed my wrist and pinned it down.
"Only 100 milliliters and you already want to quit? The other students all donated 400."
She glanced at my pale face, her eyes full of disgust.
