The story
Kidnapped for five years, Maya finally returns home scarred and barely able to speak. But at the gilded gates of her family's mansion, her mother Helen greets her not with an embrace, but with a cold demand to know why she has come back. Through the bars, Helen sneers at the ruined cupcake in Maya's hands and sends her away into the rain.
Taken in by Officer Carter, Maya is eventually brought to her father David, who installs her in a sterile guest room. In her place stands Chloe, the sweet adoptive daughter who charms the household and quietly torments Maya whenever the adults look away. Helen treats Maya as though she does not exist.
When Maya overhears Helen call her a mistake, buried memories begin to surface, hinting that her kidnapping was never an accident. In a house full of secrets, Maya must uncover what her own mother paid to be rid of her.
Opening
Kidnapped for five years, I finally returned home covered in scars.
But there was no warm hug from my mother. Only a cold, harsh question through the iron gates:
"Why are you back?"
It wasn't until I pried open her locked jewelry box years later that I realized my kidnapping was no accident.
A "relocation agreement" signed by my mother, alongside a transaction record of thirty thousand dollars.
It turned out to be her final payment to buy me out of her life.
