The story
Elena and her best friend Tess are the twin stars of the grift, posing as an icy heiress and her jet-setting companion while fleecing social climbers on campus. Their world holds together until Samantha, their new roommate, stops believing the lie and starts copying it, matching every vintage bag, beauty mark and luxury trinket with money she does not have.
When Samantha steals Harrison Caldwell, the real estate heir who courted Elena for three months, Elena lets her have him. Floating text only she can see warns that Samantha wants to erase both friends and take their place, and that Harrison is a bigger fraud than she is, a bottom-feeder luring women into ruinous loans. Samantha is already pressuring her parents to sell their only home to fund her act.
Elena and Tess hold their silence and let the copycat and the con man circle each other, waiting to see who goes bankrupt first.
Opening
My best friend and I were the twin stars of the grift.
I spent my days renting Maseratis and cultivating the persona of an icy, untouchable heiress, baiting social climbers into maxing out their credit cards just to buy me a Birkin. Tess, on the other hand, specialized in the "damsel in distress" routine.
