The story

After a family trip, a mother stops by the Hale, the casino her son Cassian now runs, hoping to surprise him for dinner. Inside, a young woman named Lila greets her with sugar-sweet politeness, then leads her to a private lounge and strikes her down.

She wakes in the casino's concrete basement, where Lila declares herself Cassian's girlfriend and future wife, accusing her of being one of his whores. Lila beats her, turns her fury on her daughter Elara, and fires a bullet into her knee. When Lila flaunts the Hale heirloom ring, she notices the matching ring on her captive's hand.

Locked in the dark, the mother can only shield Elara and pray Cassian answers before Lila returns.

Opening

I didn’t expect to be mistaken for his latest fling.

Correction: not mistaken—accused. Violently.

“You think you can just waltz in here like some queen?” she hissed. “I’m the woman Cassian loves! What kind of whore are you? And is this your bastard daughter with him?”

She locked us in the basement. No phone. No light. Just concrete walls and the stench of mildew and madness.

Then came the fists.

She slapped me across the face—again and again—until my skin stung and my ears rang.
