The story
Alex has spent two years writing a book that becomes a bestseller and wins the highest literary award. But on the eve of the ceremony, his wife Claire ties him to a chair in the study, switches their identities, and lets her longtime crush Ethan take the stage and the trophy in his place. Bleeding out, Alex watches his own death—and then opens his eyes to find himself floating above the ceremony, invisible, as Ethan thanks Claire from the podium and the crowd murmurs that the two are a perfect match.
Claire, an editor who once despised plagiarism, has abandoned every principle for Ethan. She turned away Alex's interviewers, blocked his book signing, and begged him to give up the award so she could hand it to the man whose confidence she wanted to restore. Now, as a fire consumes the building where his body was hidden, she checks her phone and waits for a message from a husband she believes will come begging within three days.
Unseen, Alex can only watch Claire lead Ethan to an empty field, light up the sky with fireworks, and listen as Ethan asks her to divorce him and be with him.
