The story
In a frozen apocalypse, the shelter's fusion core is on the verge of overload, and only Zach, a mechanic, can repair it. But when he races toward the basement with his repair kit, Miranda Dunn, the guard captain's mistress, blocks his path and accuses him of planning to poison the vents. Her lie spreads through the panicked crowd, and the guards, eager to please her, refuse to listen to his warnings about the core.
Dragged away and locked in solitary, Zach learns from Miranda herself that she has been stealing the shelter's strategic reserves and cannot afford to let him near the core district. With the pressure still rising and the clock ticking down, he is left cuffed and helpless as the ground begins to shake.
Thirty thousand lives hang on a single mechanic's word against a woman who controls the guards, and the core will not wait.
Opening
In the dead of this frozen apocalypse, the shelter's fusion core was on the verge of overload.
I grabbed my repair kit and sprinted for the basement, only to have the guard captain's girlfriend, Miranda Dunn, step right into my path.
"Everyone, come look! Zach’s about to dump poison into the vents. He's gonna kill us all!"
Her voice cut through the air as she shrieked.
"I didn’t approve a private room for him two days ago, and now, he wants us all dead!"
