The story
For ten years, Clara has loved Leo, her childhood friend and neighbor. He dates freely and sets her up with other men, including Marcus, who once confessed his interest only for Leo to trade her company for a cousin's phone number. When Leo proposes to Clara, it is only to comfort his dying grandmother; after the funeral he slips off the ring and tells her it meant nothing.
Now Leo is back, still playing matchmaker, urging Clara toward Marcus again. This time she smiles and agrees, and tells Leo that whatever he wants from her, she is done. Marcus, older and earnest, asks why she will not give him a chance now that she is over Leo.
Clara has spent years chasing a boy who never remembered his promises. Letting go is not a single moment but a long, deliberate choice.
Opening
My childhood friend, Leo, loved to date.
He also loved to set me up.
If anyone showed even the slightest hint of interest in me, he would move heaven and earth to play matchmaker.
"Marcus is back in the country," he told me, leaning against his car. "He wants to get dinner, asked me to bring you along." He glanced at me. "You should go. I think he's still into you."
"You weren't interested back then, but maybe it'll work out this time."
