The story
On the night of the World Cup final, Silas wagers with his fiancée Bonnie: if France loses, her assistant Harper will wear the dress and walk down the aisle in her place in three days. Everyone in their circle believes France cannot lose. Bonnie alone knows better — minutes earlier she overheard Silas on the balcony telling his best friend Carter that he already knows how the match plays out, and that Bonnie gets the marriage license while Harper gets the ceremony.
France loses. Silas calls Bonnie a sore loser and leaves to drive Harper home, denying he predicted anything. Alone, Bonnie cuts their engagement photo in half and calls her father: the corporate alliance stands, but she needs a different groom.
Years ago Silas was one of three heirs her father chose for her. She had sworn off love after watching her father destroy her mother — until Silas's relentless devotion broke through. Then Harper arrived, and with her a quiet intimacy Bonnie could not ignore.
Opening
The night of the World Cup final, my fiancé suddenly turned to me with a wager.
"If France wins, I will add ten beachfront estates to your bridal gift." His eyes gleamed with a reckless amusement. "But if they lose, Harper gets to wear the dress and walk down the aisle in your place in three days. Deal?"
I barely had time to furrow my brow before Silas's groomsmen started hyping him up.
