The story
During an earthquake rescue, Gwen Jones, a doctor, pushes an intern, Serena Moore, out of harm's way and is impaled by a steel rod. When her husband, Derrick Nelson, the director leading the rescue, arrives, he ignores her injury and cradles Serena instead. Accusing Gwen of faking her wounds and of pushing Serena into danger, he orders the only stretcher used for Serena and leaves Gwen behind in the ruins.
Gwen, bleeding and losing consciousness, ends her ten-year devotion to Derrick by snapping the bullet-casing pendant he once gave her and asking for a divorce. He dismisses her and departs with the team.
Her intern, Mike Levine, returns with rescue workers and, following Gwen's own instructions, performs the procedure Derrick once learned from her. As the ground shakes again, Derrick and Serena block her from the operating room, insisting her injuries are a lie.
Opening
While working with the search and rescue team to save people trapped in an earthquake, an aftershock suddenly struck.
Without hesitation, I pushed a hospital intern, Serena, out of the way. However, the force of the movement sent me to the ground, where a steel rod pierced my back, leaving me unable to move.
