The story
For twenty-three years of marriage, Tessa believed Declan Hughes had come to her porch every afternoon because of her. While clearing out the basement of their colonial before downsizing, he picks up an old photograph and lets slip the truth: he had only ever used her to get close to her cousin Sadie, who had just moved in from Chicago. The drive-in invitation, the study sessions, the muffins — all of it had been aimed at the girl sleeping across the hall. When Sadie left for Denver, Tessa was simply a good fit.
The shock drives Tessa to her knees, and in the dark before she loses consciousness she swears she would never open that door for him again. Then a doorbell rings, and she wakes at a white laminate desk in the fall she turned seventeen, with her mother calling that Declan is downstairs and Sadie curled in the floral armchair.
On the porch, seventeen-year-old Declan holds up three ticket stubs. Tessa declines, and when his eyes drift past her shoulder toward Sadie, she steps aside and tells him to ask her cousin himself.
Opening
It took twenty-three years of marriage for me to learn that Declan Hughes had never started coming to my house for me.
We were clearing out the basement of our four-bedroom colonial, boxing up two decades of a shared, quiet life to downsize. I pulled an old, velvet-bound photo album from the bottom of an apple crate, its spine crumbling into gray dust. Inside was a glossy three-by-five from junior year: seventeen-year-old me in the center, flanked by Declan on my right and my cousin, Sadie, on my left.
