The story
Corps cadet Natalie Ross has lived this night before. When the class golden girl, Tiffany Cole, waves VIP park passes and urges the dorm to slip off base at midnight to play runaway princesses, Natalie remembers the fallout: the expulsions, the ruined futures, and her own death at the hands of her boyfriend, Derek Mercer. This time she steps aside and lets them go.
Tiffany drafts a note absolving Natalie and takes twenty-nine signatures from Squad 3, Class 2. Derek signs without hesitation, mocking her lack of class spirit, while Peyton Brooks and the others jeer. Natalie quietly photographs the page and stores it away, saying nothing as the fire door slams behind them.
At dawn, Captain Briggs finds the drill field holding a single cadet and demands to know where the rest of her unit has gone.
Opening
"Standing at attention in the dirt for eight hours a day is exhausting, soul-crushing, and completely pointless," Tiffany Cole declared, flourishing a thick stack of park passes between her manicured fingers. "We’re eighteen! Youth is supposed to be wild. I even shelled out for the VIP Lightning Lane passes. Anyone who doesn’t come tonight is dead to this class."
