The story
Arthur Sterling gave up his life as the scion of a powerful capital family to stay with Seraphina in her provincial hometown, living with her parents for seven years as a kept man. When their long-delayed wedding day finally arrives, Seraphina vanishes, choosing instead to attend their son's full-month banquet with William Vance, her childhood sweetheart and first love, whose wife and child recently died. Guests mock Arthur, but he quietly buys a plane ticket out of the country.
When Seraphina finally calls, William speaks first, apologizing for her absence and coaxing her to stay with him. Seraphina, who has always treated Arthur as a caged bird, refuses to return. Arthur tells her he will mail divorce papers. She explodes, accusing him of pettiness and threatening divorce, then hangs up.
After seven years of devotion, Arthur is truly, irrevocably tired.
Opening
On our wedding day, my wife abandoned me yet again, choosing instead to join her childhood sweetheart in celebrating our son's full-month banquet. Amidst the mocking stares of every guest, I didn't raise a fuss, didn't scream. I simply, quietly, bought a plane ticket out of the country.
It took a full three days for Seraphina's call to finally come through.
