The story
At the ceremony for Aldenbury University's only fully funded graduate fellowship, everyone expects it to go to Karl—the dean's son, first in his program for three years, with two published papers. Instead, his father, Prof. Ludwig, announces Ian Sullivan, a student he has quietly supported for years whose grades barely meet the cutoff. When Karl objects, his girlfriend Megan Campbell sides with his father, and the campus brands him a jealous rich kid while Ian becomes its inspirational success story.
Summoned to the dean's office, Karl is told to hand over the core data from his classified research project so Ian can graduate with honors. It is the same pattern that cost him his prize-money tie and, as a feverish ten-year-old, his father's care.
Karl has already torn up his application and accepted an offer from Svardia's National Institute for Strategic Research. His father wants two achievements for his record; Karl intends to give him neither.
Opening
At the ceremony announcing this year's graduate fellowship, my dad, the dean of the college, steps up to announce Aldenbury University's only fully funded spot at one of the country's most prestigious graduate schools.
Everyone expects it to go to me.
I'm his son, after all. Besides, I've ranked first in my program for three consecutive years, and I already have two papers published in major scientific journals.
But when he says the name Ian Sullivan, the entire auditorium falls silent.
