The story
At a gala meant to celebrate the return of the Montgomery family's biological daughter, Cassidy, she throws herself at her parents' feet, begging them to cover her boyfriend Jax's five-million debt to underground bookies. When Jessica, the daughter who lived Cassidy's life for twenty years, tries to intervene, Cassidy shoves her and calls her a fraud, refusing to move until the money is paid.
Jessica offers a trade: sign away her claim to the Montgomery estate, and the debt is settled. Cassidy refuses, and their parents' silence leaves Jessica to act. She orders the room cleared, revealing that for five years she has carried the family's shipping empire while Cassidy chased a gambler. Cassidy threatens suicide with a steak knife, then finally agrees to marry the youngest Moretti son.
But Cassidy keeps sneaking back to Jax, pawning Jessica's jewelry to fund him, and when Jessica finds her bruised in a motel room, the Moretti merger and the family's survival hang on whether Cassidy can be made to let him go.
Opening
"Jax owes the underground bookies five million," she wailed, her voice cracking through the silence of the ballroom. "If he doesn't pay by midnight, they’re going to break his legs. They’ll kill him!"
She looked up at our parents, her mascara running in ugly black tracks down her face. "The Montgomerys have more money than God. Why can’t you just pay it? Why won't you help him?"
The air in the room turned brittle. My parents stood frozen, their faces turning a ghastly shade of grey.
