The story
For ten years, Liora has stood beside billionaire CEO Corwin Sterling, believing his promises that she would one day become his wife. When Calista Hawthorne arrives carrying a letter from her father, whose company has collapsed after a hostile takeover, Corwin takes her in—and his attention shifts away from Liora as if she never existed.
At the Sterling Annual Gala, Corwin hands Liora a glass of wine infused with berries, the one ingredient that can kill her, chosen because Calista likes it. As her throat closes and she begs for help, he dismisses her as jealous and pretending, turning instead to Calista's minor complaint. Liora barely survives, saved by Elisha, and wakes in a private clinic to learn Corwin has left the city with Calista.
Alone, Liora calls her parents and agrees to marry the man they chose for her, while a chest of four hundred ninety-eight letters—each promising a proposal at five hundred—sits unopened beneath her window.
