The story
One month before the SATs, Nathan begins seeing a neon score floating above his head. Every practice test drops it by ten points; every skipped day of school raises it. He parties his way to a perfect 1600 — then the real results arrive: 400. The 1600 belongs to his younger brother, Caleb, who controls the projection. Disowned and thrown out, Nathan is beaten to death in an alley, hearing Caleb's voice as he dies.
He wakes one month before the SATs, the number above him reading 1300. This time Nathan burns the practice sheet, refuses the tutor, and lets Caleb believe he has fallen for the trick again. A hidden camera reveals the truth: dropping below 1000 triggers crippling neural feedback, and Caleb is counting on Nathan's brain to fry.
Nathan finds the glitch — mental work done in a leisure environment goes unregistered. He takes Caleb's savings, holes up in a lounge, and works on mathematics until the score blazes 1600. On results day, the family gathers for a banquet where Grandma, matriarch of the Xu Corporation, will name her heir. Caleb accuses him of lying to her face.

It was a curse. Every time I completed a practice test, the number dropped by ten points. But for every day I skipped school to party, it went up by ten.
I spent an entire month partying. The number above my head climbed to a perfect 1600.
But when the actual results came out, I scored a 400.
